Replacement of Fuel Pump gl1200

Postby Poohman » Sat Dec 17, 2011 6:51 pm

I'm just wondering if anyone has an knowledge of about using a 1985 honda prelude fuel pump in replace of my fuel pump on a 1985 gl1200 Aspencade that has carbs not fuel injected. I have heard that I could use it and just wanted to make sure that it would be ok to use. I have looked at the fuel psi and that prelude psi is from 2-3.5psi and if i am correct my fuel pump is rated for a max of 4psi.

It's a fairly common fix, using the fuel pump from a 1985 Prelude. Have a look at:

Here's one with some pictures:

Thanks for the reply wingAdmin. I really appreciate it. Are you still in Ohio? Getting ready to come up to see family in Wapakanyta and in Muncie, IN. for Christmas. Been living in florida for the past 16 years and my daughter has never been in the snow. So, hoping for a white christmas. Lived in IN until 1996. Florida is nice Bike riding state. :)

Yes, still in Ohio - and it's snowing out right this minute, it has been nonstop for the past 11 hours. I finally gave up and admitted that my biking year is over, and have spent the day pulling my 1500 apart for winter maintenance.

I have the prelude pump on my 84 aspy and it works perfectly. Seems to run smoother than the factory pump. It is made by airtex and can be bought at autozone for $60. No modifications needed other than attaching the plug to the wires on it.

I have a question about using the fuel pump from a Honda Prelude.
It mounts right on no problems, does make a clicking sound (not noticeable when riding).

I put one on my GL1200A, and now it seems to be running rich.
When idling you can smell gas.
I was getting 45 mpg then with new fuel pump i am now getting 25 mpg.
Is their anything I can do to improve my mpg?
I have checked for leaks and found none.

Does not make since to me.

Thanks in advance for any help with this problem.

When you first turn the key to the on position, do you hear the pump click for a bit and then stop? This is with bike not being started or running. If it continues to click then the carb floats are not shutting off the fuel to carbs and the pump is not building pressure to the shutoff psi. Try pulling the spark plugs to see if any one plug is blacker than the others. Maybe the fuel pump is not the proper one and is over pressurizing the carb floats?

What was wrong with the old fuel pump? I have an old one that was clicking loudly and I changed it figuring it would go out soon.

The old pump was clicking loudly, then stopped working.
With the key on (not starting) the pump clicks a couple of times and stops.
When trying to start it, I have to give it a twist of the throttle before it will fire up.
It cranks over slowly then after I twist the throttle it will finally fire up.
Before the old pump went out it would start up real easy.
I broke down and ordered another fuel pump from ebay.
