I am wanting to add reverse to my bike as it has a hitchhiker sidecar and I have arthritic knees. I thought of maybe an automotive starter with a fabricated rubberized cover over the gear to engage the tire and attached to the framework of the sidecar by fabricating brackets Someone may have another low-buck idea ????
Thanks,,, Joe

Re: GL 1200 reverse gear
I've heard people come up with similar ideas, where they would use a lever to push a rubber wheel against the rear wheel of the motorcycle and use a geared electrical motor to reverse the bike.
You would definitely want a geared motor however - you want to back up slowly, and a starter motor would instead have you careening off backwards into a ditch. A geared motor would also draw a lot less electrical current to move you backwards.

Not so much a Red Green project
I remember years ago a bicycle motor assist engine that after the bike had been pedaled up to a reasonable speed a lever was pulled and the motor was lowered onto the rear tire, the friction started the engine and then the motor would provide power assist to the bicycle.

I remember my dad had one on his bike, I can visualize him pedaling off to work cigarette in mouth soft flat cap on
Cant remember how long the tires lasted
I have often thought about the possibility of the design used for providing a reverse for heavier bikes like the 1200 etc.
I just learned never to park into an area that I cant roll back out off easily

Re: GL 1200 reverse gear
I read somewhere that there used to be a reverse kit available, probably aftermarket.
