stops running

Postby thorton » Fri Jan 06, 2012 12:30 pm

I was wondering if anyone has had the issue with engine shutdown after a few miles. This occured more frequently the last time I had it out. I went about 10 miles and lost power till it quit altogether. I waited about 10 minutes and it started up. I went another 5 miles and it quit again. I repeated this till I got home, each time a little sooner. The first time it happened I pulled a plug and had good spark so I'm thinking it's not coil related? Someone suggested fuel pump and I saw the conversation about using a honda prelude pump as the 87 fuel pump seems not available?

When it dies, does it stumble and quit like it's running out of fuel, or does it just shut off like you hit the kill switch?

Well that does sound like a fuel supply issue. Before buying a new fuel pump i would check to see if the vent hole in the gas cap is plugged. next time it quits open the gas cap to see if there is a vacume build up. if there is just try to leave the cap loose for a little while and drive down the road. If the bike does not quit it is a clogged vent. Spray the cap with carb cleaner and then blow it out with compressed air and see if that takes care of the problem.

Check your fuel filter to see if there's junk in it that's blocking fuel flow. I'd also take it out again and run it on the reserve setting on the petcock and see if you get the same results, could be something in your tank or just water from condensation.

If it's dying from what seems like fuel exhaustion (not a sudden cut-off), then I'm going to go with the vote for the fuel cap as well.

Just curious I can ride 20-30 miles as of late and my 1985 limited does the same thing it acts like it is not getting fire or not getting gas i know when i crack the throttle it varies on whether it cuts off or catches up jerking and sounding rough I am at my wits end just wondering if you ever figured it out. Yesterday when it did it I thought I was out of fuel went to store to get some in a jug got back and fired right up. I took off the cap and the gas was sloshing around looked like it was coming from the top of the tank. Would or could the spark plugs do that? Did the same thing today I coasted into gas station and it cut off would not run for 10-15 mins and was the same way the 7-8 miles home so frustrating.

If the fuel system doesn't pan out as the problem,I heard about a intermittent crank angle sensor by the timing belts causing the "when warm it dies".
Not the pulse coils for the coils.
It can be tested only when it quits as a comparison to Ohms readings when it is working,so 2 measurements are needed.
I also heard that the part is no longer available, but someone retrofitted one from a 1500 to fit in it's place.
Look at the manual for it's location and test point and ohms reading.

What or where is the gas cap vent does anyone have any pics? Thanks for the input virgil I can hear the pump come on and pressure up cutting off until I push the starter button and I can hear it again then it cranks IDK guess a fuel pump could get overheated? The fuel pump relay was pretty hot today when it did it. The other relays were cool to the touch.

Before you get too carried away, try riding the bike, if it stops again, open the gas cap, this will let air in and keep riding, if with the cap opened (You shouldn't loose any gas) the bike rides fine for 20+ miles then it confirms the breather is the problem. if the bike still dies after another 10 miles with the gas cap open, then it would suggest the breather is fine and that it is more likely a problem with the fuel filter or pump. Don't keep driving for 100's of miles with the gas cap open, but for a short experiment it is fine to ride with the cap open.

That sounds good thrasherg waiting out the rain here in north carolina then I will check it it looks like the original fuel filter so I may change that anyway hopefully it is not something too complicated or expensive I love the Motorcycle and only need it to be reliable so I guess I need to work on more PM for it anyway.

I am still not clear on the gascap thing on the underside there are two tabs that do not seem to move? I know it sounds like a vacuum whenever I open it after running no matter how much gas in it. Also does anyone know if sparkplugs could cause these symptoms?

Ok guys, let's assume you have a extra spark plug laying around.Put it in your pocket.remove what you have to off the bike, either side,to be able to pull one plug wire off.on mine,I have to remove the rubber boot that holds them together.
See where I'm going with this?
Put 1 plug on one wire and crank the engine to get a idea what the spark looks like while cranking.
Ride it till it quits completely and get it stopped.pull that one plug wire off and stick on the plug from your pocket.Try to start it and look to see if it has the same kind of spark as when you first started it.
This will eliminate or confirm the ignition system.

The vent is inside the cap.if you can draw air through the hole the center, the cap is ok.on my 3 bikes, when I loosen the cap,it releases pressure. If you suspect fuel starvation, leave your door unlocked, drive till it starts to die, loosen the cap and see if it returns to normal
