Universal joint boot replacement

Postby melhadden » Fri Jan 01, 2010 7:16 pm

Hi all,
I was wondering if one has to pull the swingarm to replace universal joint dust boot? I'm having to pull my rear wheel and noticed the dust boot is in very bad shape. Looking through repair manual, the solution is to pull swingarm or can I pull final drive and driveshaft and move u-joint out of the way? Is there a replacement boot that is split on one side like the old VW rear boots?

Bike is 1984 GL1200 aspencade

havent had a 1200 for a while and didnt replace the boot when I had one, BUT I just replaced the boot on my GL 1500 and pulling the driveshaft and moving the U-joint was how I did it. There's not a whole lot of room, and a set of long bent nose hoseclamp pliers is a real help. Another added benefit is that you can lube the splines on the back end of the driveshaft and check them for wear. ( I ended up replacing mine, actually)
