Parts for Engine Rebuild

Postby Warrensocal » Tue Jan 17, 2012 7:27 pm

I was able to get an '84 GL1200 cheap because the engine needs to be rebuilt. What are the best sources to buy the parts? Are oversized pistons still available if it needs to be rebored? I may just have a shop do all the work. Does anyone know of a good mechanic in Riverside/Orange County California? Any other suggestions or advice will be gladly accepted...

Thanks,

Warren

You can look at the top of the page under "vendors" tab for suppliers.

How do you know the engine needs rebuilt? Mine has 152000 miles on it and still can pull away from the neighbors Harley. If the block is toast,it may be easier to get a used engine from a salvage yard locally with under a 100k miles.
If you can find things like pistons, rings and bearings, expect them to be expensive.Like $50 for just the ring set....per piston.

It doesn't turn over so it seems the engine is locked up. I looked at some other posts and read that others with engines that wouldn't turn over put seafoam in the pistons and were able to free it up. I've got the seafoam and am letting it soak in. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for the feedback.

A good slurry of sea foam and ATF will eat away at the corrosion.Just pull the exhaust off.you don't want all that stuff setting in it when you start it .It will never quit smoking.Been there done that too
