85LTD fuel injection problem

Postby voyager1 » Wed Feb 01, 2012 9:32 pm

Fellow wingers, got a 85ltd fuel injected model that runs good cold but starts to miss when warm and given throttle. Here's a list of what's been done. New plugs, fuel filter, cleaned cone filter, fuel pressure regulator, new temp sensor, removed entire system cleaned+ replaced all vacuum hoses and o rings, cleaned and checked all reed valves, drilled out breakoff bolts to adj. tps, syced throttle bodies, checked all wiring connections, sensors+pbr/pbl, tighthened timing belts and checked air gap on ns sensor. There's no lights on the control unit or dash out of ordainary. Left coil seemed weak by the arc test so I'm waiting on a replacement before I proceed. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks, Voyager1

It is possible that the crank angle sensor is going bad.eg thermal breakdown.
Much like your coil can do,as it warms up and expands,a fractured connection or wire inside the coil could lend to a poor or false signaling to the ICM.

One question.how long does it run OK...If it runs OK for just a couple minutes, look at the ignition coil.It gets a good workout right away.
If it takes a while, like when the engine block gets warm, look at the sensors bolted to it.Such as the pulse generators or crank sensor.
If you locate the plug for the sensors, you could measure the resistance when the bike is cold, and again after it's warmed up really good, when it acts up.This will give you a base line OHMS reading for your sensor in a working mode and a not so good mode.
I have seen the coil/sensors change from 300 ohms to a bit over 900 ohms in 15 minuts of running the motor. It was "thermal" and eventually opened completly after the full 185* temp came up.

Bike runs fine till it gets warm maybe 2-3 hash marks on the gauge, then starts to miss mainly on the one coils cylinders. I switched the igniters to check them but no go. I try your suggestion on a cold + warm test and go from there.I'm still going to replace the coil, it just seemed to weak. tried switching wires around but it seemed to follow the weak coil. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like you got it under control.Swapping the coil wiring and the miss following the coil pretty much leads you the problem.Good diagnosis method.Keep us posted on the end results.

Hey guys, put the new (used) coil on it and walla, not perfect yet but runs pretty good. Arc test seems even between both coils now. Didn't get to ride it yet but will weather permitting and see how it runs then. Later

Just an update. Took it for a run about 20mi. Ran pretty good but still has a flat spot off idle and sometimes a miss +pop like a lean cond. I think I'll try the honda car tps retro. and go from there. Thanks for the imput guys.
