DADS BIKE

Postby dotboy » Fri Feb 03, 2012 8:14 am

I am trying to help my dad with his 1985 Goldwing it will crank and start and run for about5 min but then it dyes. and then it wont start back for awile. I think if it were a bad coil it would still start on the other (it has two right?) i checked it and it dose not get fire after it dyes.

There are "sensors",pickup coils, pulse generator,or whatever you want to call them.Your bike has either 2 or 3 of them.On my 84 there are 2.One for each coil.yours may have the third behind the timing belt cover. Some refer to it as the crank angle sensor.I believe it's needed for the fuel injected model's computer.

Usually on the 1200,when it dies from no spark after warm up,the pickup coil behind the timing belt cover is "thermal"...loosing continuity when warm.
Download the manual for your bike, locate the test point for the pickup coils.Measure them when the bike is cold and able to start....let it quit and then test each one again.

The most common thing I've heard is "It's a fuel injected gl1200 and dies when warm" and the end result is the crank angle sensor.

Now...this is common BUT it may not apply in every case.Even a bad KILL switch can kill the spark.
Dig a little and let us know if its a interstate or a aspy and fuel injected or not .I will make no assumptions about what you have from here.

OK, if it has carbs,it's the same as my 84 I'm driving.Troubleshooting will be easier.I only has the 2pickup coils, and there easy to get to the plug to test them.
