cooling fans blowing wrong way ???

Postby bndbelle » Sat Feb 11, 2012 10:42 am

Hi everyone,
I bought my 95' 1500 last June and love, love, LOVE it !!! I noticed after riding it when I pulled into my driveway the cooling fans were blowing hot air out the front. I am just guessing, but I would think that they should suck air in and blow it in through the radiators. Every time I ride at slower speeds in town it runs hot. Any help ???
Thanks

They are made to blow out,I have a 96 aspy and it is the same way. They did this to help keep the heat off of the rider and the motor. They should only come on when motor is heating up like setting in traffic, and go off once you hit cursing speed. If she is over heating you might what to check your thermostat, antifreeze, and water pump just a couple of ideas. Hal

Thanks for the reply Hal. That makes sence they would blow forward so as to not blow hot air on me. It does cool down after I speed up.
Thanks, Bruce

They are to pull air from the front and blow out the sides just like the bike would do running down the road at faster speeds. The fans are there for the slow speed and should pull air from the front through radiator and blow it out the side of the bike.

My fans don't do that, they suck air from the engine side of the rad. and blow it out. That is why I thought they are blowing the wrong way. If they come on when the engine is hot and I am driving 25-30 mph I don't see how the air will cool it. The air from the fan and the air i'm driving through would "fight" each other and not cool the radiators. Right ?

On Goldwings from GL1000-GL1500, the fan sucks the air in the front and blows it out the side. On the GL1800 they reversed it, so it sucks in the side and blows out the front, to keep the heat off the driver. Some people have reversed the fans on their GL1500's to do the same thing.

The problem with the "blowing out the front" mode is that between 10-15 mph, the forward motion of the bike cancels out the fan blowing, and the bike can (and will) overheat because it is getting no cooling air moving over the radiators. This is a well-known problem with GL1800's.

Thanks for all the input !! This is the best site for info !!!!! I am going to change the direction they blow because I do not want it to over heat at slower speeds.
