What's this mystery screw?

Postby WingAdmin » Wed Mar 14, 2012 5:37 pm

While ripping bad wiring out of my GL1500, I found this screw. It was nestled in a bundle of wires inside the fairing, just forward of the right side fan, above and behind the radiator.

Does anyone recognize it? Any idea where it belongs?

It nothing like I've removed from mine, but when I was working in the Bowles I did find 3small bolts that were obviously dropped and not fished out, just replaced.

Come on WingAdmin, we have been telling you for years that you have a screw loose and now you have finally found it..

Definitely looks after market (not Honda) so I guess a PO dropped it by accident and it got caught in the loom, he probably used another bolt to replace the lost one.. Think of the extra performance gain you will have from the saved weight of this bolt and all the redundant wiring you have removed!!

I found the source...the fact that it's stainless is what solved it. It's one of the screws that holds the bracket for a Butler drink holder, mounted onto the brake grip. You remove the OEM screws, and use one of these longer ones to replace it, along with a couple collars and the bracket. I guess they just dropped one, and replaced it with another, without bothering to go find the original one.

Don't ya wish you could just grab it and turn it upside down and shake all the loose stuff out of it?
Kinda like a piggy bank,ya never know what might fall out.
First time I pulled all the lower plastic off,a 1" square piece of green plastic lens fell out.Found out 3 weeks later it came out of the neutral indicator display. And yes that was before I pulled it out too.
Now I found, after the last screw was installed,a 2''x1/2" curved piece of plastic laying dead center of the bike??Who knows, maybe a snap on cable stay cover.
I'm not gonna spend another 4 hours looking for where it might have come from.I was DEEP in the bowels of it last weekend.
