What to look for in a Used Goldwing ?

Post by bentleyss » Sun Apr 08, 2012 8:41 am

Hello to all, Newbie to the Forum but have been reading it for awhile. Well I've finally decided to sell my Sportbikes and move up to a Goldwing. Been looking at them on and off for years now but not seriously. When I hit 62 I decided I would finally purchase one. I've been riding Cycles for over 40 years and Interceptors for the last 18. I'm now looking at a 1993 and a 1992 Goldwing that are up for sale near me. Both are around $4500 range. Both have between 75000-85000 miles on them. Just wanting some input on what you Goldwing riders would really watch for in a used "Wing". I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, done my own maintenance and service for long time now. The Goldwing is a new beast for me. I'll use it mostly to commute back and forth to work, a distance of 110 miles roundtrip. Just sold one of my Interceptors with 250000 miles and my "98" just hit 85000 and still runs terrific. Any suggestions or hints appreciated. Thanks

We can go on for ever about this.Just type in gl1500 in the "search" area and begin reading all about them.Their problems, cures, common trouble areas, etc.
In the mean time.If you got a eyeball on one,you need to look for rust in the swing arm,by the rear tire
Raw gas smell
Dripping anything.
Bald tires and ratted out rotors(ridden hard)
A quiet engine (they sound like my Lexus)and no popping out of gears(impending transmission repair $2000 dealer job)
Average price for a fair 1500 of any age seems to be from $2500 to $7000.
Expect to have to do all the general stuff.Brakes, timing belts, plugs, etc, unless it's a dealer guaranteed sale. These things are cars on 2 wheels, look at it the same way.

Park with the rear wheel 4 or 5 inches higher than the front wheel. Put the bike in neutral or any gear except 4th or 5th and listen very carefully. Turn the bike around, with front wheel higher than rear, listen again. If there is a clicking noise that goes away when the direction of the bike is changed.......it probably has a 4th gear selector going out. It will cost $2500 to $4,000 for a dealer to fix.
