Has power but wont start

Post by wingkid » Mon Apr 09, 2012 6:56 pm

It has been a couple years since bike has been started. My father passed away and i am taking care of the bike for my mother. Went out and put a new battery in it today and all the lights lit up, radio came on, but when i push the starter button it shuts the radio off while holding button. I have hooked up jumper cables as well and nothing. There is no clicks whatsoever when starter button is pushed. When bike was last parked it ran great. It is a 1995 GL1500 Anniversary bike. I am new at working on bikes and was wondering where to check and what. Thanks Jason

Did you charge up that new battery? Sounds like it is undercharged and needs some time on the charger. While it's charging, check and make sure that all of your connections to your battery and solenoid are clean and free of any deposits.

Just a lil question, BEFORE you get it started. Did you empty out any old gas that might be in it, and put new in? Couple of year old gas isn't very good for trying to get a bike started, and it won't run very well on it. The radio shutting off is normal, when pressing start. As you have boosted and tried to start, it appears you have some problems getting the power to the starter, which could be loose connections, or the starter motor could be seized if the bike was stored in damp conditions. Most likely tho, the connections are corroded.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

The radio and headlight are supposed to go off when you press the starter button. The bike must be in neutral or the clutch held in if the side stand is down.

Have you checked the 'Kill' switch to make sure it is in the run position?
Sometimes they get bumped to the off position.

Check the main fuse beside battery under plastic cover. Flat strip fuse, when blown will daisable the starter system. Attempting to crank with weak battery can cause it to blow.

Hey Wingkid,

Do you have a neutral light before attempting to start? I had that issue once and found the reverse lever switch to be sticking.
