breaking tire bead

n't know if this has ever came up but,can the bead on a tire be broke by using a bar clamp with a 1 1/2"wide flat end on it? i have seen the small carry with ones and that is about what they look like,kinda. maybe more like a C clamp.

I'm sure that would do it, yes - however you might damage the tire in the process. Obviously not a problem if you're breaking the bead just to replace the tire. I know when I replaced the tires on my GL1500, I had a fair amount of difficulty breaking the bead even with a professional hydraulic tire machine - it was on there tight!

Thanks wingadmin,I was trying to put dyna beads in front tire
But they wouldn't go in. The valve stem is at a 90%angle and I think they are
binding at the bend even though they aren't very big

I had no problem getting dyna beads in through the stem - I used a new method. I took a long tube just slightly bigger than the valve stem, and "screwed" it onto the valve stem. I then poured all the dyna beads into the tube. Then I took my air hose nozzle and put it in the end of the tube, and it blew all the beads into the tire in less than a second. I let it blow a bit more, then slowly let the air escape, to prevent the beads from blowing back up (and out of!) the tube. Worked great, and very quick!

I use my bench vice to break the bead on my tires when I replace them. I have a set of motorcycle tire irons that I use with cardboard in between the irons and the rim to prevent scratches and any damage. The clear plastic hose and valve from an empty can of fix a flat works well to help with installing beads.

at was how i tried to put the beads in also,tube just big enough to go over the valve stem and air hose to "push"
them in.didn't put them all in the tube at same time but didn't work the way i tried.would think that not as many would go in
easier.i s your valve stem at a 90 degree angle to the tire? had very little gas in bike and ebven laid it down to help get them in,still no luck. their is a you tube video on putting them in,will have to find it again and watch more closely

I normally just hook the small hose and little bottle onto the straight valve stem and pour them in while flicking the side of the tube:

However with the 90 degree stems, it just wasn't flowing in as smoothly. That's when I had the air idea. I was extremely surprised at how quickly the beads disappeared into the tire when I hit it with a blast of air. I had the bike on the lift, so it was straight up and down, not leaning on the sidestand.

will have to check the pressure setting on compressor and boost it up,also try it on the centered stand instead of the side stand.really don't want to break bead to put them in.
i got my beads from here,checkeredflagmobiletires.comreal nice folks.greg is the guy i dealt with.3 oz of beads was $7.05 no tax and free shipping to lower 48.first try at ordering would only charge shipping to canada,$12.95. i contacted greg and he fixed the problem.payed with pay pal and all was good.once payment cleared 3 days,5 start to finish.let them no how to package them and they will shipping them like you want.i got 3oz and in 1 1oz and 1 2oz package.nice folks

Dont really know how to do a link - but the webpage of Dynabeads gives advice on how to load the beads, including a detail for a Honda Goldwing! It recommends using a "vibrator". Sounds interesting!

I made a "vibrator" out of a drill and a piece of coat hanger wire, so it would "whap" the hose repeatedly, vibrating the beads into the tire. Worked great on the 1100 with a rubber valve stem. But my 1500 has metal valve stems, so that's why I had to come up with the "blow it in with air" method.

I just have to ask.....Does this method of balancing really work in real life? Never heard of Dyna Beads so I had to check their website. Theoretically it seems like a good idea. Does it have any drawbacks? Does it make any noise? If applying to existing tires, I assume tire must be deflated first?

Yes they work very well. I have been using them for about 4 years now. No noise and tire has to be deflated with valve removed.

I do not know if they work, but I just put brand new tires on, and the dyna beads are the only balancing system in place at this time, and the balance "feels" great. No vibration at any speed up to 150 (kph that is :lol: ) which is about 95 mph. I have ridden about a hundred miles since putting on the Avon Cobras and dyna beads, and either the Cobras were perfect for the rim they went on, or the dyna beads work. I would put my money on the dyna beads. I had to filter them in by the tire bead before setting the bead to the rims, as I have tpms on these rims. Most of the beads made it into the tires. I cannot put them in the valve stems. I have heard from a friend who used an engraving tool that the vibration method works like a charm. Oh, and as to breaking the tire bead, I have a Harbour Freight bead breaker that I have been using for about twenty five years. It works well for bead breaking, but getting the tires on and off the rims by hand is a beotch. :twisted:

They work amazingly well. I've used them as the only means of balancing in my GL1100 for years now, and I like them so much that I now have them in my GL1500 and my truck as well (and yes, I took ALL the wheel weights off my truck tires - it has beads only, and it works great!).

That video clip just about convinced me......more so, other riders recommending DynaBeads are the best argument, and THAT convinces me. Quoting Will Smith from "Independence Day" : "I've got to get me one of these!" .
As for breaking a tire bead....I have in the past been able to successful, several times, break the bead on trailer tires with the use of two barclamps/C-clamps spaced 6-8 inches apart, and a rubber mallet to help inbetween the clamps. Not sure if I would feel comfortable doing the DIY on a motorcycle wheel though. Altough, it seems others are having good luck doing it themselves, hopefully without compromising safety.

i have tried every suggestion on this subject and i can not get the beads into my tire. i have the 90 degree valve stems and it looks like at the bend they are "crimped" just enough to not let them thru.air pressure up as high as it will go,used a bremel at various speeds and nothing seems to work. i no a guy at work that has a bead breaker i can use with tire still on bike.hope that works or don't know what next. oh yea, ran a thin flexable wire into valve stem to make sure it wasn't pluged with some beads ,all was clear. :(

that was a very interesting read mikeb. the only thing i would be taking a deep breath or two would be taking the tires of the bike. front maybe only one rear maybe two or three. around here labor is almost what my front and rear tires were when i had them put on at dealer. thanks again
