neutral light

Postby BobM » Mon May 07, 2012 2:11 pm

1988GL1500
The neutral light does not always come on when it is in neutral, when it does come on the bike runs great, but when itis put into neutal and no light shows on the dash the bike misfires, lack of power.
When the light is on you can start it on the side stand without the clutch in, but when the light does not come on the only way you can start it is with the side stand on and the clutch in
Any suggestion?

I've noticed that my neutral light doesn't always come on when down shifting from 2nd to neutral but always works from 1st to neutral.
I think it's time to inspect the switch assembly.

Now,with that information, the selector switch has 6 wires coming out of it.All of them also end up going to the ignition control and cruise modules.
I have noticed that the idle RPM will change if the gear selector is in the 1st,N,2nd gears as compared to 3rd,4th and 5th.
So,I can guess that if the selector switch is repaired,it may also improve your and mine ignition timing and the expected timing changes. It may not know what gear your in and just go to a factory default mode.
The ignition module may not be receiving the proper grounding signals for each gear and you get no indication of the switch failure except the neutral light.

I'm gonna look into this ASAP and post the results. In the mean time, look into repairing the gear selector switch.

There are actually only 5 wires: N, 2, 3, 4, 5. When each of them is grounded, the appropriate gear is selected. When NO wire is grounded, it knows that it is in first.

(I know this because I hacked into it to make the gear indicator portion of my "Bike PC" work)
