Rear shock replacement on a 1500

Postby quikcarl61 » Wed May 16, 2012 9:26 pm

Ok here goes, tomorrow my Progressive 416's will be here. I am going to install them myself and was wondering when installing, should I only do one side at a time or pull them both at the same time. I will be working off the floor, using a strap from the engine guards around the center stand, and also center stand thru front wheel for when I am reinstalling so as not to push off the stand. Thanks for any and all help.

I think you'll find it impossible to do one at a time. The new shocks will no doubt be taller than the existing shocks with their tired springs that you will be replacing. As a result, once you remove one, the distance between the swingarm and the top shock mounting bolt will be too small for the new shock as long as the other shock is holding the swingarm in place.

Put a few thin pieces of wood under the rear tire to hold it in position before you take the old shocks off. Then you can slip out as many pieces of wood as you need to move the swingarm down to the position so that the new shocks will fit into place.

Thank you for the reply, I hadn't thought about the shocks being longer. Also the bike only has 37K but probably spent a lot of the last 3 years on the side stand. I love this site and because of it I am encouraged in what I can do myself to save money form having to use dealerships. Thanks again
