Doesn't start when cold, but starts in the sun when warm

Postby rkkstrieb » Sun May 20, 2012 10:28 am

I have been struggling with my bike for the past several months. I keep the bike in the garage which is kind of cool. I have a very difficult time trying to start the bike, however, when I move it out in the sun for a while, it starts without an issue. The bike runs fine for the rest of the days ride.

Could someone please tell me what I can do to try and correct this problem.

Can I assume that the no start when cold means it will crank OK just not run???
If correct,I'll make a guess.

When cold, fuel contracts and can lower the fuel in the lines.Put it in the sun and the heat expands the fuel and pressurizes the tank. It's kinda like priming the fuel system by getting the fuel up and ready.

There's one thing to check,The vacuum fuel shutoff valve. There is a vacuum line from the right side of the engine that may be leaking or the vacuum unit may not hold a vacuum(pinhole).

The next thing to try, when cold and won't start, cycle the kill switch 3 or 4 times. This will cycle the pump and fill the lines to the vacuum valve.

The last thing to test....on the right side, pull one plug wire and put on a spare plug. When cold, crank the engine and verify there is spark.

Thank you, VirgilMobile -

I will try what you suggested. Yes, I meant cold starts. So, you think the pin hole would be on the vacuum line and not in the diaphram of the petcock? Is it difficult to replace the vacuum line? I guess I could try that first.

Thank you again.

It can have a vacuum leak in either.
It's possible that with a leak, when you cold crank it,the valve is having a hard time opening.
Testing the valve means using a gauge to see if it will hold a vacuum, and then test or replace the hose.

For testing you can bypass the valve.
