gl 97 1500 lower fog? lights

Postby RBGERSON » Mon May 28, 2012 9:18 am

I just got my first 1500(lots of knowledge on 1000's and 1100's but nada on the 1500) so the lower fog lights don't' come on..should they be on when I start the bike is there a switch someplace? Should they be on when key on accessory or park or???

Where should I start to hunt this down..all other lights on the bike work.

I'm not sure what year the change was made but originally those lights were cornering lights that came on with the signal I believe. Turn on your signal light and see if the light comes on. On my 2000 they come on with ignition and are on all the time, no switch.

Roger, those are cornering light, you can connect them to be on with the ignition switch. They don't produce very much light for there only 25 watt bulbs I believe. The way the lens is set the light is directed forward and to the side depending on which signal light is on.

Yep..I didn't even notice them when turning at night..but I have some fog/running lights that really light the close in road..that are on a switch so I'll the corner lights as they are.

Thanks

If you are a clever chappie, you can reverse the corning lights and make them into running lights that stay on ........ only problem is that when you turn the indicator on left or right that side corning light will go out until the indicator stops flashing.

I did mine many years ago but can't recall how I did it. I think I had to swap the lens over on each light so the the light pointed straight ahead instead of round the corner as it were, and reversed the wiring.

You don't have to reverse them. Just clip the green (ground) wire on the relays that actuate the lights (located just above the lights themselves) and they will stay on all the time.

Don't waste your time unless you plan to change the lense. Cornering lamps are not very affective as driving lamps. Light is angled to sides, not straight ahead.

As robb says, the lights are not going to produce a lot of light to see the road ahead unless the lenses are changed, but if you install LED's and have them on all the time you will be more visible to other drivers from the front. The LED's don't take much power and anything that helps us be seen is, in my opinion, worth the effort.

And that is why I also run upper driving lights.
