1993 GL1500I

Postby leondrew » Tue May 29, 2012 8:11 pm

my 1993GL1500I died while riding. Restarted after a while on sidestand. Would die after being raised off sidestand. will start on centerstand sometimes. I have to turn key off and back on either way to restart. Sidestand light goes on and off no problem. bike dies if put in gear when stand is down just the way its supposed to.
can this be an ignition key issue? sidestand safety switch?(disconnected and no difference)
Help. confused. lol

It is very possible it's not electrical related at all.
Have a close look at the fuel cut off vacuum valve.
It opens with engine vacuum from the right side manifold.Check the hose.
It is possible the vacuum diaphragm has a pin hole in it and does not open very well.Pull a vacuum on the hose and see if it holds.
If the valve is bad,or you just want to eliminate it as your problem,it can be bypassed temporarily.

Im in search of a used headlight assembly for my 1993 GL1500I. Mine is cracked from trip from Alaska in Jan (cracked during transport in bed of truck.oops). Moisture got in and took out both bulbs.

i ordered a new sidestand safety switch. Its the only thing that makes sense. I got started on sidestand no problem. raised and put on centerstand no problem. Pulled sidestand up and down in neutral a few times and bike died. Ripped bike apart to get to elect plug. needed to clean n oil my K&N filter anyway and spray carb cleaner in carbs. Theres a lot of junk under the radio cowl. lol
thanks

Question....When it died..was the neutral indicator still on? and did the side stand indicator go on and off when the side stand was moved every time?
I do know that if the side stand is down and you put it in gear, that combination will kill the ignition system

yes. all lights functioned as advertised. i think that sidestand switch losing contact killing ignition. i put in gear with stand down, light on, and bike died as supposed to do. seems as pressure is applied to switch (outter switch rotates on center) kills ignition.
thanks

I'll Verify in the morning by the schematis but I seem to remember the other wire from the side stand switch is a ground path for the ignition relay.if so,till you get a new one,it could be bypassed to test the theory or at least measure the contacts with a ohm meter.I guess it's something to loOl into for a emergency roadside repair info.
I might try to compile a list one day.

thanks. that makes sense cause when it refuses to start, i hear the ignition relay click on the left side and hear nothing from the starter selonoid on the right side (next to battery).

Yes, Virgil is correct, the sidstand switch does supply a ground path for the "starter relay" but only in the "up" position, in the down position it only supplies a ground path for the indicator light. The path for ground for the starter relay goes throught the "reverse switch relay" and into the "reverse diode assembly" then through the "clutch switch". The "starter relay" also pulls a ground path through the "gear position switch", this is why the bike will start in "neutral" with the clutch disengaged. If the gear psoiton switch is in any other position other than neutral the only ground path is through the clutch switch.

I replaced the sidestand safety switch with a new one. started great on sidestand and centerstand. Thought fixed and then died again in gear just down driveway. Twice. Have to turn switch off and then back on to restart and then it only starts on sidestand. weird. Something is killing the ignition.
This bike does not have reverse. Interstate.

Just the fact that it takes a key off reset makes me think it might be the ECM.

thanks. I started bike on sidestand. raised and put in gear, stand up, neutral and sidestand lights went off no problem. held hand brake and bounced bike front and rear up and down like a bumpy road. The road it quit on originally was US 66 near Oatman Az. real rough asphault. This had to shake something electrical loose. bike died many times while douing this. im really lost now. lol
thanks

If your suspecting electrical, the first thing I'd look at bypassing is the bank angle sensor.
Here's a post on how to do that.
The ignition ECM module gets it's power through switches and a relay,One may be intermittent.
The BAS is first suspect as it can leak it's dampening fluid out and get real sensitive to movements.

thankrs all. I ordered a nes BAS and then discovered a screw missing from the old one. It had dropped outta level and bike would only start on sidestand. Put new longer screws with locknuts and runs fine now. Replace with new BAS when it arrives. The old one was replaced in the recall in 1995 in Anchorage Alaska Honda Inc told me.. I bought bike there in 1998.
Thanks again.
