Gas cap vent

Postby zamboni920 » Sun Jun 03, 2012 8:36 am

Every time I open my gas cap (1988 GL1500, but similar on all Goldwings), I can hear the "pssssst" of vacuum beeing relieved. I have noticed this on cars and motorcycles alike, and almost want to think it is normal. On the other hand, the vent in the cap should prevent any vacuum?
Can this be fixed/cleaned, or is a new cap in order?
Any sure way of testing?
If this vent is clogged/stuck, it would slow down fuel flow....?
Any particular symptoms to listen for, if this is the case?
I do hear some popping in my exhaust occassionally, especially if I hit the throttle quickly. This popping I have attributed to gunky carbs, or perhaps a vacuum leak, but maybe it would be worth doing the gas cap first.

In the summer it could be air rushing out..heat expands the gas. But you can try to clean the cap, drop in muractic acid for a bit. Some drill a hole in the cap defeats it's purpose but it works.. Note if it is creating a vacuum it should stop your bike from running after a few miles of riding if it doesn't i wouldn't worry about it.

My 1500 has been doing/making that noise (pssssst) (I think I have spelt it correctly) since I have had it (22 yrs). It is nothing to worry about.

I would not worry too much about it. If you do want to clean the gas cap just take it and soak it in some seafoam over night. It sould remove any gunk built up in the vent hole.
