MAJOR headlight issue- cannot ride until fixed!!!

Postby ghostvet » Fri Jun 08, 2012 1:24 pm

Hello,

A major problem surfaced the other day- the headlights just stopped working (high and low beams)... But here is the weird part- they work fine as soon as I activate reverse (high and low beams)!

So, I know the bulbs are fine since they work when in reverse..

The fuse block has been checked- every fuse is OK.

All other controls and switches seem to working fine.

Other than a few dash, control stalk, and a couple of side marker bulbs being burned out, there are no other known electrical problems. Everything else seems to be fine.

HELP!!! I CANNOT RIDE UNTIL THIS IS FIXED!!!

Oh, 1997 GL1500SE.

Normal operation of the reverse system turns off the headlights when the START button is pushed. Had you not mentioned reverse, I would have said the START switch is the problem. Now I am not sure, but that is where I would start looking if it were me.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Disassembled the starter switch as per http://www.goldwingfacts.com/1500startbutton.htm

Cleaned everything up with fine steel wool and electrical contact cleaner. Then sprayed silicone white lithium grease very liberally inside the starter switch.

Reassembled the whole thing and VIOLA! Ze trick, eh she is done!

The whole job took me about 30 minutes.

The logic is- the starter switch, when activated, switches the headlights off so the starter gets full power. If the starter switch is dirty/sticking, it messes the whole works up!!

Thank you to everyone who helped and to everyone who had this problem before and posted it!
