Seat Cushion (Air, or Gel)

Postby jazzrider » Fri Jun 15, 2012 3:19 pm

I am looking to get a seat cushion for long trips, What are the feelings yall have on these. I have heard the air was better as it is adjustable and the gel can get hot in the sun.

Thanks

Why not get a sheepskin, cool in the hot weather, and warm in the cool weather. The sheepskins also provide a degree of comfort as they cushion you from the seat.

You can get them in a number of colours, as standard, but if you find someone who dyes them, then perhaps you can get a colour of choice - like lime green??

Of course, in Oz and NewZealand, there are lots of sheep, so getting a processed seat cover is not that difficult, and they will cut and finish the skin to suit the application. They are great in the car as well, even when the temperatures are high (112F +) or down to frost, they are comfortable.

If you want I can send you a sheep any colour you like and you can have it as a friend (bit of NZ/Aussie humor there   ) or make it into a seat.

Are you sure? If they are NZ sheep, you will soon have some Kiwis (Kiwis = New Zealanders) taking up residence! The Kiwis are rather partial to their sheep - some people say you have to get up early, otherwise you get an ugly one, but most Kiwis dont mind.

Sorry about the colour on the previous one, slips!!!

Yep, definitely from NZ. A friend of mine went there for a vacation and brought a sheepskin rug home with her. My wife loved it so much that I ordered one from the same outfit. I'm told that they produce the finest sheepskin rugs in the world.

Rather than having a white sheep skin we (NZ) have them in just about any colour you want. Or you can have a mixture of colours. They are specially bred and kept in their own paddocks as they don't want to colours to get too mixed up.

Two NZ sheep farmers are flying the mob to a new farm. Suddenly, the engine fails and the plane begins to fall quickly to the ground.
SH1: "Quick! Grab a parachute and jump!"
SH2: "What about the sheep ?!?"
SH1: "Bugger the sheep !!!!"
SH2: (pause) "Do you think we have time?"

Okay, back to the original question, sort of. . . . . How well do those sheep skins/pelts repel rain water if parked outside a cafe during a storm? Do they load up with water or does it expel pretty good? Thanks

This thread went south pretty quickly.

I suspect that any type of cushion be it air or gel or sheep won't do well in rain. Beads may be the answer there.

I met a guy in Kalispell that had an air cushion that he swore by. Unfortunately I can't remember the brand. Think it was an Air Hawk. He did say it was $100.

The sheepskins do not do well in the wet. Even though they have a lot of natural Lanolin (good for the hands too), so as to protect the sheep while they are in those rainy paddocks, most of the Lanolin is taken out during processing. To overcome this issue, a plastic bag or some other waterproof item draped over the seat will cure the problem.

I dont like riding in the rain, (that is why I live in Oz rather than NZ), as we have had 125 mm (5 inches) of rain since the beginning of the year, but we did have 50 mm (2 inches) in June, so we may get enough to refill the water tanks after the coupling hose came off and drained the tanks.

But getting back to the topic, the sheepskins are very comfortable in hot or cold weather, but not in hot or cold rain. You should be able to get a large shower-cap plastic thing, and that should be good enough to keep your butt dry and the sheepskin pristine.

What if my butt is to big to put a rain cap on?

Get yourself a Harley - they have some of those extra big seats for people that have your problem. The rest of us can wear our shower caps wherever we like - even on the seats :D

I have modified my seat (had to take the cover off) by cutting the foam under my hip bones and added a airless bicycle tube cut and formed to fit the outer circumference of the seat. I can ride thousands of miles before my backside hurts. If you need it done I do it for a reasonable price.
