What's these switches for

Postby Russ Levy » Tue Jun 19, 2012 5:35 am

Have just taken possession of a 1988 GL1500. The guy I purchased it off could not explain them or what they do, There are two switches on the left hand side faring at about knee height, there is writing but not able to understand Japanese don't know what is said. Can anybody tell me what they are for and do. Attached picture is a bit dark but hope it helps. Also, what is the procedure for engaging reverse, he didn't know this as well. Any help most appreciated. Cheers Russ Levy

Look like an add on for lights? some sort of accessory anyway, take off your side pocket see if you can tell where the wire lead follow them to the source. Reverse; put bike in neutral pull lever up and use the starer button to operate the reverse.

Thanks for that, have tried the switches, they don't seem to do anything, must be standard so that you can add extras if you want to and you don't have to make holes for the extra switches.

I posted this picture in a Japanese forum and asked if anyone could translate. I got a few (differing) answers. Here are the replies I got...take it for what it's worth:

Caution:
Gold Wing.... equipped with air damper
Please adjust with adjust knob...
... air pressure... direction
... air pressure... direction...

It says 取り扱い上の注意 "notes for handling/operation."
It seems like notes about blinkers or headlight but the picture is too small to identify.

Apparently, those are controllers for optical axis adjustment of headlight of a Honda GOLD WING.

Does your bike have the air system on the right side, if not it could be an add on. Might want to check forks for air valves.

The bike has the compressor switches on the right hand side faring, I know how to work them. Have downloaded the owners manual for the 1988 1500GL, but there's no mention of those two toggle switches.

Had a good look, there's no wires going to the switches, so it seems that they are there so if you want to have add-ons, switches are in place to save making holes in the faring to fit extra switches.
