gl1500.will it run without the air cleaner????

In my messing around with the off idle hesitation problem,On one test run with the slides propped open 8mm yielded positive results ......BUT....I noticed it would no longer accelerate toward 4 grand without spitting sputtering and having to feather the throttle.
I took it home and just put on the air cleaner and cover....It ran through 5 grand OK and the burp was gone.

Is it normal for the bike to not accelerate well without the air cleaner and box cover or do I have (as I suspect) a slide problem.?????

I just wanted to see the slides operate under a load.I seem to remember I could run the 1100 without the air cleaner.

I think the rubber on the slides(25 years old) are stiff and not very responsive.

Maybe it depends on the air cleaner to provide enough restriction for sufficient vacuum to be generated at WOT, for some un-named mystery vacuum function?

I don't know....At off idle, it preformed fine,as I tried to accelerate, even at 1/4 throttle it spit and sputtered.I had to feather the throttle to get it to 5 grand. As soon as I put the air cleaner and cap on,it ran smooth.
I just don't remember any other bike needing the air box complete to run the engine down the road.
I'm thinking(hoping) this is a symptom of poor slide action, stiff diaphragms.

So who has a 1500 that wants to rip the radio cover, air box and filter off and run it down the road to find out. :D :D :D :D .....Hmmmm..I don't blame you...Better leave it be. :)

Anybody got a lead on new diaphragms for the 88???

It appears normal.the slide is also ported through 3 vent tubes going somewhere.I'll add a O ring to lift the slide a bit and run it again
