fuel auto shutoff

Postby TennX » Fri Jul 06, 2012 7:27 am

When the weather breaks out of the triple digits and I can get in the man cave, I intend to go thru my 97 GL1500 front to back, Ive read about most things that need to be seen to , but the fuel shutoff doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it, should I rebuild/replace just so I know where Im at, bike has 36k on it...many thanks

I'd at least vacuum test it.
I also am not opposed to preventive maintenance, however you can go overboard replacing everything that could fail in the future.
It would be best to just be aware of it and it's purpose.Just knowing that if it leaks fuel or the vacuum side stops and kills the fuel,It can be bypassed "on the side of the road" with just a few tools and things that you carry in your emergency repair kit.

You did make up one didn't you?????

Things like a few wrenches, tape,a hunk of wire and fuses, test light......you get the idea.Emergency repair stuff.

Would it make any sense to put a manual fuel shutoff between the auto and the fuel filter , I know it would be a pita to remember to shut off every time I parked the bike for long periods, but I dont want to live in fear of hydrolock...lol... I was reading in the archives about the electric add on unit ...thanks for the reply

and yes to the tool kit....

Mine leaked fuel and at that time no kit was avaiable.I'm the one who posted about the electric replacement.I use it on my bike.it's one of those things to decide if it's worth the time to do now and not worry about it anymore.the $30 for the electric one was cheaper than a rebuild kit is now for the vacuum one.
