Headlight problems

Postby garygneiser » Mon Jul 09, 2012 4:20 pm

Hello,

I am a proud owner of a 1990 GL1500SE which is a awesome machine. Just recently while driving the Headlight, taillight, Temp and Gas gauges just stop working. Everything else works except it will only push start. The first time it happened July 4th, it quit, I pulled over to check the fuses (all were good) and after I push started it, everything went on again for a few miles then off again. After hobbling to the campsite 15 miles away 9pm, I parked it on a hill in case I needed the running room. The next morning everything was back to normal, she started right up and everything worked. Up till last night, she quit again in the same procedure.

My question is, do you think it is the battery ground?

Thank you,
Gary

All those items are fed off of relay #3 I believe. I would start with checking it.
"It´s a friggen motorcycle, it´s not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The wind noise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you s**t your pants every now and then. "

Thanks for your response,
Being new to this version, where about would I look for the #31 relay?

Gary

If it is #3 relay, it is located behind the left rear side cover, inside the relay box. It is the top right relay:

I'd start by having the battery load tested!

You'll find some more relay info here:

http://www.goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewt ... =6&t=11945

Have any extra electrical goodies been added to that circuit?

From reading this myself I think I am going to check my relays for fit. You can switch the air compressor relay with the #3 to check it.

Thanks for the usefull info, will check it out when get home from work.

Yes the bike is loaded with lights, 3 sets on the trunk alone. I don't think there are any more lights available that hadn't been put on. Very visible, but hard to clean behind them. When I changed the . rear tire I took off the lower 2 sets and left them off.

I added led lights to the front of the bike and sidecar. They were wired to the marker lights, but since went the first blackout, I rewired them through a switch and to the battery.....

I big thank you to all my new GW friends..... :D

Upon getting home, I removed the relay cover and noticed the #3 relay was tipped slghtly to the left. I pushed it in all the way and the lights went on, hit the starter and she started right up. It look a whole 5 minutes.....

Thanks again,
Gary

Do you know what I like most about Goldwings, OK, besides the awesome, solid, quiet, smooth ride? The people that use them....

Almost certainly means that the spade connectors are loose and you need to tighten them up or you will have bigger problems down the track. If it can just move out of connection from normal use there is something wrong.

Hello Charlie,

Your absolutely correct, I have them a squeeze with the needle nose, much more solid now.

Thanks millions,
Gary
