How does the starter circuit work on a 1500

Postby RBGERSON » Tue Jul 10, 2012 5:49 pm

I am use to the gl 1100's one solenoid. I just bought a 1500 and have read several times about issues with the 1500 starting circuit. Two solenoid's and other differences can someone give me a once over review of things to look for if mine fails..what to jump or not, things to check,..like kick stand, gear safety circuit?, whatever....

There are 2 solenoids.
1 solenoid from the battery and the second one is the grounding circuit. the starter is not grounded through it's case. There is a separate terminal for that. It's used by the reverse speed control

There are different wiring configurations, but essentially, both click for crank and only one clicks for reverse.
If you need specifics on wiring, post the year and model.I can compile the schematic.
"we" have been learning a few things about the different 1500's and some things that fail.
You can also do a "search" gl1500 at the top of the page and indulge yourself for many hours reading all about them

It's a 1997 SE and I have been reading stuff in general..but when I see something specific that I figure I'll be dealing with soon or later..I'd like to at least have an idea up front..and maybe make a file for download to my computer on it..
