Not stupid but very curious! 5 gears. 1 down and 4 up from neutral. Is there not another gear even when the OD light comes on? Some earlier 1500s had a 4th gear problem but I don't think that is symptom of the 4th gear problem. ???

??? All I can say at this time is there is something wrong. Maybe someone else can chime in.

My 88 has 4 gears I think, and the OD does not come on....hence why I have it in pieces now in my garage, trying to figure all the things out on it that I need to fix.

Gotta love the internet....

The 1989 GL1500 flat-six engine displaced 1520 cubic centimeters. It had a single overhead cam (SOHC) and two valves per cylinder. It produced 100 horsepower at 5,200 rpm. The cylinder bore was 71 mm and the crankshaft stroke was 64 mm. The compression ratio was 9.8:1, and the cooling system was liquid. The transmission offered five forward gears (and one in reverse), with a cardan final drive shaft. Brakes were discs on the front and rear wheels.

Every Goldwing ever made has one gear down and four up, so five in total. The GL1500 should show OD in fifth gear.

IAN59,
It's a 1989. Does it shift and run well with 4 gears? Keep on riding. If you don't have a 'passion' for Wings your bike is prolly only worth a grand as it stands. How much money you want to put into it is up to you....remember as soon as you're done, something else will break. Unless you're a fairly skilled bike mechanic, who else are you going to get to fix it and how much are you going to put into it. Don't venture too far from home and keep in mind they shoot horses that go lame......

Honestly, keep all the factors in mind when evaluating how much you want to do to your bike and how much you want to put into it.

Me personally, with my skills. If I had a bike with a tranny issue. I would look to people that like to restore bikes and have the skills to use all the parts. Make your money back and buy a bike with no issues if you can.

Have you tried to shift up a gear after the OD light comes on. Had a funny issue when I tried swapping wires from 4th and 5th gear to increase cruise lock speed. In 4th the OD light would burn and radio got louder with speed but it still had 5th. Swapped wires back and all is OK. Seventy five is fast enough for cruise for now.

I know where he found the missing gear ........ it was in the rear panner as the previous owner did not want it to get warn out and put it in there for safe keeping.

Don't worry we all have done or made silly comments. You will be able to dine out for a while on that one.
