Charging issues!!! Help Please!!

Postby krock123 » Sun Jul 29, 2012 7:35 pm

I have an 88 1500 with charging issues. The bike came with an extra alternater that was supposed to be bad. I pulled the alternater off the bike and carried it to a local shop. After a couple days I called and I was told the stator was bad and he couldn't get parts. So I take the other alternater down and get it checked and its putting out 14 volts on the bench. So I install the working alternater and the bike runs good for about an hour and dies. I put a volt meter on it at the alternater and I'm getting only 10.8 at 2500 rpm. I figure I have wiring issues so I clean all grounds and positive connections. I remove the alternater to find a wire that is broken. Can anyone tell me what the black wire with the green stripe that runs to the alternater. This bike is new to me and it's my first wing. It needs alot of TLC. It's apparent that it has had some wiring issues in the past.

I'm no alternator expert.Ask anyone, but the alternator has a internal diode array and regulator system.
It should need a "trigger"wire. The wire should have switched ignition on it.Without that voltage, the alternator will not generate any power.

Thanks alot! I am no mechanic by any means but I enjoy working on things! Supposedly the alternater I put on was bad. As soon as I installed it I checked the voltage and it was only 10.8 at the alternater. The wire was't completely broken at that point. It only had a 2 strands holding it. Ok so can anyone know how to get the clip inside the T plug out so that I can reattach the wires?

All connectors have a release tab somewhere.they usually just push in a little.remove it then solder the wore back.
