I have one on my 1500 and have not had any problems. I have the utility bag that straps to it with two hooks and two Velcro straps. You have to be mindful of the weight you put on the luggage rack. We carry our two rain suits, bike cover, and a pair of sneakers for each of us in our bag. These items are handy to get to and it leaves space for items in the saddle bags and trunk for items that I would rather have locked up when we are away from the bike.

Like smilam said, it comes in handy on trips for carrying items you need quick access to. I also think it helps dress out the bike a little. I use mine often and have not had problems of any kind with it.
