Postby furnacedoc » Tue Aug 07, 2012 9:33 pm

Hello, I can only start my 1997 1500SE when it is in neutral. Should I be able to start it in gear if I have the clutch plulled in?

Also the switch at the side stand could be stuck, check that does the stand side light go off when the stand is up?

I can only start the bike if it is in neutral with the kickstand up or with the kickstand down and the clutch pulled in. It will not try yo start if it is in gear with or without the kickstand up or the clutch pulled in .

That sounds correct. You should be able to start:

- In neutral, regardless of kick stand or clutch lever position
- In gear, if clutch lever is pulled in and kick stand is up

From the owners manual:

Your motorcycle is equipped with a side stand ignition cut-off system. if the side stand is down - the engine cannot be started unless the transmission is in neutral. If the side stand is up - the engine can be started in neutral, or in gear with the clutch lever pulled in. After starting with the side stand down, the engine will stop if the transmission is put in gear before raising the side stand.

I would say that the switch by the side stand is dirty. Put the bike on the main stand then get down on yer knees on a mat, and by the side stand you will see a switch that lines up with the side stand. Spray some CRC and then push the button in a few time (it will return as it has a spring to push it out).

Also spray some CRC on the kill switch and flick it back and forth a few times to work the CRC in.

Problem starting bike

Postby furnacedoc » Tue Sep 04, 2012 6:04 pm

Hello, I am still having a problem starting my 97 1500se. It will only start if it is in neutral. It will not start in gear with the kickstand up and the cluch pulled in. I think the kick stand switch works because when I start it in neutral and put the kickstand down it kills the engine. any suggestions will be appreciated

If mine has set for a few days, while on centerstand will not crank in gear with clutch pulled in. Sometimes neutral light requires a giggle of reverse lever. Take out of gear and it cranks OK and after 3 or 4 miles will crank in gear with clutch pulled in. Could be micro switch or neutral switch, possible reverse switch.

Hi furnacedoc, all I can suggest or recommend it the moment if you can get a copy of the Goldwing service manual and turn to section 16 where there are a number of pages for trouble shooting the bike not starting. It is a flow chart with yes/no etc. I have a manual for the 1988 so they should be all about the same. I have done the start of the search for you http://www.goldwingdocs.com/Manuals.asp ... &year=1997 someone looking may be able to find the page etc.

I hope this helps.

In that case it's very likely going to be a bad clutch switch. There are two clutch switches - one that clicks when you just barely pull in the lever (that is the cruise disconnect), and one that clicks when the clutch lever is pulled in all the way. It's that second one that is probably failed. Mine went as well, causing the exact same problem. I replaced it with a new one from Cyclemax for $10. The Honda part number is 35330-MB0-003, it's number 6 in this diagram:
