eractic idle

Postby markliner » Wed Aug 08, 2012 1:42 pm

hello guys, new to this site but not motorcycles. I just bought a used 93 asp. with 107000 miles . bike is very clean, and runs very good. two small problems i have ( i think they might be related) but is has a erractic idle. 1000 to 1150 rpms. also when i have the cruise set it also flucuates alittle. I dont really have any history on the bike other than apperance. I am going to have the timing belts changed as a precautionary measure. any ideas? carb syn?

Probably not, although a carb sync won't hurt and is easy to do.
First verify that the "choke" is actually all the way off.A partial choke will cause surging.

Most likely it's a problem with either vacuum lines or junk in the slow speed jets.
I would first do the easiest thing .Run a couple tanks of Sea Foam through it and see if it will clear it up.
Remember, while using sea foam, the bike may not magically run perfect. It takes time for the stuff to work.
If that fails, there are several vacuum lines in question.2 on the left intake pipe,2 on the right,2 on the carb and 1 under the carb.
If it gets to the carb area, you will have to remove them(yuck) and replace the vacuum lines.
Might as well clean up the carbs while your that far into it.It will kill the weekend for sure.

You can do a "search" at the top of the page for gl1500 surging. There's plenty of reading and various problems found. Here's a direct link...http://www.goldwingdocs.com/SearchSite. ... 2429705j14
