Front fork tube replacement

Postby Midas » Wed Aug 22, 2012 11:51 am

Am in the process of replacing the right fork tube on my '97 Goldwing 1500SE. Got the tube out of the fork but not sure how I get the "plunger thingy" (tech talk ;) ) out of the tube.
Never done this before and any help would be appreciated.
TIA
Midas

I think the "plunger" you refer to,sticks out of the bottom of the fork tube???
If it is,you remove the top cap.Be aware that it is under the spring force and can launch through a window if you don't keep a good hand on it.
On my 88,it takes most of my wieght to compress it back down enough to put the cap back on.
Here's a post with a bunch of pictures that may help.viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10786&start=25

Yes the "plunger" sticks out of the bottom. I have the top cap off and the big spring out but the plunger does not come out either direction. Is there a snap ring or something holding everything in?

No snap rings.it should push all the way up and out of the top. The thingy has 2 plastic rings on it that may be catching on the threads tho.just wiggle it out the top.

Got the piston (plunger thingy :D ) out.
Only thing left is the little yellow o-ring inside at the bottom of the tube.
Please tell me there is an easy way to get this out so that I can start putting everything into the new tube.
Thanks,
Midas

The yellow ring should be on the "thingy",not in the bottom of the tube.
If there is stuff left inside the fork tube like the rebound spring,I'd be using a coat hanger with a bent hook to retrieve it.I'm concerned why the piston ring came off.

Boy do I feel like a twit!
I was so wrapped up with wanting to get the yellow ring out I hadn't looked at the new tube.
It's already got one in it!!! :D
Looks like I just have to put everything back together now.
Being green as a new olive, I sure do appreciate all the help here.
May have enough confidence to tackle that vaccuum leak? ......one thing at a time.
Thanks again!!
