Vacuum Leak

Postby Midas » Fri Aug 24, 2012 12:02 pm

I have a '97 Goldwing 1500SE. I have a lot of popping when engine braking along with poor milage so I'm pretty sure that it is a vacuum leak somewhere. When I start it cold and use the choke the sucking of air is very apparent directly under the console towrds the front. Shut off the choke and sucking noise disipates.
Does anyone know which vacuum tube this may be? Which tube usually goes out first?
I know this is a random shot 'cause you can't see or hear it, but thought I might ask before I start tearing things apart that I know nothing about.

My 88 has the same noise when using the "choke"....It's not associated with a vacuum leak.
As far as a vacuum leak....I found one big one under the carbs, below the rubber mat.(3 hours to get to)
I subsquently located and replaced 6 more hoses that had impending fail points, all at the sharp 90* bends.
I used up an entire day with it.

That sucking noise is normal for all GL1500's when the choke is on. I've never bothered to go look and see what the reason for it is.

By the way, Virgil... if you want a "degrees" symbol, hold down the ALT key, and on the numeric keypad type: 167, then let go of the ALT key.

Some useful codes for characters not found on keyboards:

155 ¢
156 £
167 º
171 ½
172 ¼
234 Ω
241 ±
242 ≥
243 ≤
246 ÷

Thanks guys for the info.
Looks like I will have to wait for winter to replace the vacuum lines.
If it took you one day, I'm probably looking at close to a week.
Thanks again...ride safe!
