Speedometer & Dash help!!

Postby alextele » Sun Sep 23, 2012 4:56 am

I dont know if anyone else has had this problem but here goes.
I have a 1989 1500 Goldwing.

I was riding my wing and I start hearing this high pitched noise coming from what I thought at the time was my speakers, Turns out it wasnt it was coming from the dash area. At first it came and went, then it did it all the time the bike was moving.

I could not get the noise to stop but I noticed it quit when I stopped so I figured it was my speedo cable. I was 20 miles from home on the highwway at night so I was trying to get home, the noise was constant, then my speedometer lights went out, my tach is fine but the speedometer was black, I could however see the needle moving.

I got home, removed my cable at the wheel, its not broke, looks like NEW. I took my drill and tested the speedo, it was moving the needle. However I still have no Speedo Dash lights and I am not sure if my speedo is ok.. Anyone ever experience this? Im at a loss.. I hope the speedos dont have a habit of going bad.

Thanks for any help..

Oh, that would be a bugger, since I know that I have my dash apart from the bike....but follow the steps on DIY 1500 "replace LCD lights", that is what I used.

I have a high pitch squeel but it is coming from the wheel itself, not the dash.

You may have a small stone jambed between the brake pad and the disc ....... or ........... the front wheel bearings are shot and will have to be replaced.

Sounds to me that the squeal and the lights going out are more coincidental than related.

Get the front wheel off of the ground and give it a spin. What is the condition of your brake pads? The wear warning may be telling you something.

I will check for rock, etc., since I have one of the rotor covers off. Good idea.

While you have it apart, pull the cable out of the housing and clean/lub it. I use Vaseline on mine as part of annual service.

"Cable out of the housing"....ok, talk to me like I am 2.....I had to take the cable out of the connection to the wheel so that I could get the dash up high enough to disconnect, so that part is already done. Do I vaseline the cable? Do I vaseline the connection that the cable goes in to?

Ugh, nothing like learning from ground up but I am having a good time with it. LEDs should go in to the instrument cluster today (I have a day or so of time to work on the bike this weekend)

Vaseline is a bit thick for my liking, particularly in cold temperatures. You can buy specific cable lubricant, but I prefer to use dry graphite lubricant. Have a look at this article for details:

How to replace your speedometer cable

It shows the GL1100, but the procedure is almost identical on the GL1500.
