Just replaced the two sub filters and the timing belts on my 97 1500. SO I went to record the info in the owners manual..and saw it says timing belt replacement is recommended at 100,000 on 1500's Not 50 to 60 like 1100's. Of course the belts were 15 years old but only 63,000 miles???
Any comments....done deal now so this is definitely hindsight for me..but maybe not for others..
Note the cruise control filter was still good, pliable and in one piece, looked almost new except for the indentations from the holders ridges. The other one was in pieces or at least getting it out torn it up.

Re: timing belts and subfilters
No way I'd let my belts go to 100,000 miles, particularly knowing that most bikes take many, many years to get to 100,000 miles. Perhaps if I was doing 100,000 miles in the first five years of the bike's life, and it never sat for months during the off-season....no, probably not even then.RBGERSON wrote:Just replaced the two sub filters and the timing belts on my 97 1500. With the usage our bikes get, I think 50 to 60 is reasonable.

If you don't KNOW when they've been changed, its time. Remember that the motor will self destruck if the belts and you can't compensate fast enough with the clutch. Same way with my cage. It will do the same thing. I'll change it at fifty thousand just to be sure. I have only twenty on the wings belts but will change them next year. I average ten a year.

Re: timing belts and subfilters
Just changed the timing belts and the two sub-filters about a week ago. I purchased the '99 this summer with only around 15,000 miles. But not knowing the history of maintenance I thought it best to change out everything - air filter, fuel filter, along with the belts, etc. I thought it would also be a good way for me to get to know the bike. For the price of everything, I feel it was worth it.

Re: timing belts and subfilters
Did the sub filters.....as mentioned in another thread. Now the belt....hmmmm. Like I really want to get this damn bike together but with the rain and such, maybe just keep on doing the maintenance until April when the rains stop.
