89 Wing not starting

Postby OkieVoss » Mon Oct 29, 2012 8:14 pm

Ok here goes, I rode my 1989 Wing in one day no problems on the ride or starting when I had stopped, but when I got home killed it and then tried starting it the next morning it cranked over a few times when it stopped with clunk type noise and would only click after that. Have new battery so thats not the issue even have taken it off and recharged just to make sure. Next got the starter off and checked with my local starter rebuilder "say's no problem with starter', replaced the relay thats going from battery to hot side of starter with starter sounding like it's trying but engine will still not turn over, even tried jumping it jumper cables, no success so far. Anyone have any idea's that a shade tree, amatuer mechanic can do??????

I did hear of a hydrolocked gl1500 once.
Remove all 6 plugs and try to crank it again......If it's hydrolocked.....be prepared for gas to be expelled 20 feet from the bike.....
KILL THE IGNITION WITH THE KILL SWITCH.
As fun as it sounds, you really don't want to turn it into a flame thrower.

Will give this a try, it just confuses me that one day it was running great with no stutter at all and then the next day nada.

Can you push the bike in 5th gear and get the engine to roll over?Or even when on the centerstand ,5th gear and turn the wheel?
Just trying to determine If the engine is stopping it or something associated with the starter system.

Don't forget too,the starter has 2 cables to it.one is power and the other is ground. It's a design for motor control for reverse.

Check the "b" relay ,remove side cover where you check the oil ,relay is by the brake pedal ,jump this engine should crank . also check reverse lever wiggle it while trying start button . ckeck clutch switch, side stand switch ,neutral switch.any of these will disable starter.Good luck

OK, here goes, I have a 88 and had the same problem, new battery, relays, starter, alt, guess what, there is a little switch in the reverse handle, I put a switch in, and had to adjust the cables too. I still have a problem, but when I move the reverse handle the bike starts, now the cables go across the engine to an enternial switch ( I think), but after all the new parts , all I have to do is wiggle my reverse .....oh well... hope this helps...phil

Ok got the bike started, had to take the plugs out and when I cranked it over it turned with ease and shot some fluid out of one of the cylinders, don't know for sure if it was gas or not. Drained the gas tank into a clear container to make sure there was no water in the tank, put what I thought was some fresh gas back in after replacing the plugs cranked over about 4-6 times and it fired right up. Haven't been able to ride it since for I've just had abdomenal surgery but do plan on getting back up on it as soon as possible. Thanks to all for the helpful advice.
