1500 speedometer stopped working

Postby liljack » Thu Nov 01, 2012 10:43 am

I assume a cable needs replacing, I did that on my old 1200 years ago is it the same setup on a 1500 or is there something else I should check?
Thanks
In the meantime I am using my GPS to show my speed.

When mine stopped working I wrongly assumed it was the cable. Turned out to be the plastic gear inside the housing on the wheel. Very easy to remove the cable at the wheel and confirm it is actually broken before spending the money on a cable you don't need.

If your cable has never been serviced now would be a good time to do it. You can remove the entire cable from the bike without too much trouble. Some folks just pull the cable out of the sheath, clean and re-grease it and push it back up.

When you remove the cable at the wheel, raise the front so the wheel is off the ground and then while gently spinning the tire hold your finger on the end of the drive tab. It should turn smoothly. If it clicks or jumps around the plastic gear has been sacrificed. Run around $20 but you have to remove the wheel to fix it.

I replaced the entire shebang for about thirty bucks.
