GL1500 Shift Shaft Oil Leak

Postby stanyo » Thu Nov 01, 2012 3:31 pm

My 1989 GL1500 W/100K has developed a small oil leak (just enough to be very annoying). I have noticed about .040-.050 play in the shaft coming out the case. Is there a decent way to replace the seal and bearing without splitting the case?

That's a fairly simple (and cheap) repair that can be done in ten minutes or so, no case splitting required. :) Have a look at this thread for details: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=14123

And as for the wobble. Not much can be done for that. They all have that small amount of play.

Finally got around to replacing the leaking seal. It took a little more than 10 minutes though. I had to remove the exhaust cover, remove the exhaust header nuts, lower and hold down the exhaust, pull the seal.(The previous owner tried to fix it with silicone dabbed all around it.) I had to clean the block and install the new seal and then reassemble. About 2 hours with cleaning the exhaust cover of the oil that had dripped down. I am one happy camper now! No leak!
