You might want to check and/or clean the starter button internals. That is a critical part of the headlight and reverse system.

Any time there's a headlight problem that seems connected to the starter/reverse operation, you first step should be pulling apart and cleaning the starter button contacts. It has a set of contacts that disconnects the headlight when it is pressed. When it gets dirty, it can cause the headlight to go out when it's not supposed to.

Hello, I also have a 97 gl1500se and I love my wing. I had the same problem and discovered it was in the contacts of the start switch just like the other guys stated. I did a quick fix by seperating the switch assembly and spraying crc contact cleaner in ,but this winter I plan on disassembling the switcvh and cleaning it and then also the dimmer switch. See ya on the road.
