GL1500 sudden loud radio volume

Postby tazzmann1952 » Mon Nov 19, 2012 5:54 pm

I ride a 91 51Se with only 54,000 miles on it.I bought it out of Arizona , 2 years ago. Love the bike .
I have had numerous Hondas over the years.
But on this one the radio most of the time works fine,
but once in a while i hit a bump and it just blares out full volume , and it will not come down !
You really have to play with the knob to get it down.
TG for the mute to bring it down cause it is embarrassing in traffic 1.
Any help out there ?
Thanx
Tony

Can you eventually get the volume lowered by messing with the volume knob?

Can you clarify the initial settings before the problem exhibits itself?
When you are listening to the radio, do you need to have the volume knob turned way up?...then u hit a bump and the actual music volume suddenly elevates to where the knob is set?
Or are you having the knob set at a 'reasonable' setting and you hit a bump and the volume gets elevated? perhaps to a level inconsistently high in comparison to the knob's position?
Keep the rubber side down.

Your volume rheostat is shorting and needs replaced.

This is a little off,but.....there is a mute button on the left side....My 88 will not completly shut off the volume, only reduce it a bunch.
More than once,I've left it "muted" and cranked up the volume on the radio.....When I bumped the button..well it was full blast again.....

OH CHRIST! I didn't even think of this....I've done that more than a few times.

I know it isn't the problem tho.He does use the mute switch to lower the volume.it's probably a ground breaking loose on the volume control.

I did some digging into the schematic.
I suspect that,by your description, there is a bad solder joint, either directly at the "dual" volume control or it's common grounding point.
The volume control is actually 2 controls connected together and a sudden increase in volume can only be if both controls loose the ground connection.
You would need to disassemble the whole thing to get to it and look.
There is a manual for that on this site.
