Postby gowers » Tue Mar 23, 2010 10:20 am

I have a 1994 Goldwing 1500SE and when i try to start the bike the starter turns over very slowly like its not getting enough power. I have replaced the battery and the brushes on the starter, i have also did alot of the test from the manual but no luck
ANY IDEAS

Well, what I would do at that point is eliminate the other points of failure:

- Ensure the battery ground cable is tight, clean and secure (at both ends)
- Connect a large battery cable to the positive terminal on the battery, and touch the other end to the electrical terminal on the starter

This will crank the starter, so make sure the bike is in neutral, so it doesn't launch itself off the stand. If it cranks well doing this, then you know the problem is in the wiring/solenoid between the battery and the starter. If it still cranks poorly, you know you've still got an issue with the starter.

when i replaced the brushes in the starter i did a bench test and the starter worked great ,could it be the rectifier??

Running the starter on the bench is different than running it in the bike - on the bench, it is not under load, and does not draw very much current.

I'd try what I described above to identify where in the circuit the problem exists.

The rectifier is not part of the starting system, so I doubt that's the problem.

Good advise from Wing Admin., did you check for shorted or open armature windings when you had the starter apart ? Was it worn and did you clean it up and undercut between the contacts etc .? Did you follow the manuals instructions ?
I just rebuilt alt. and starter on a newly purchased 88 1500 with 205000 kliks on it .
Alt. needed both bearings, seal and brushes , starter needed rear bearing only , brushes were ok. I cleaned it out and repacked with new grease .
Wing Admin ., check will tell you if the solinoid is at fault , if check is ok , do above armature winding check with a multimeter . If you dont have one , buy a cheap $ 15.00 needle gauge type as they work fine for this check .
All the best .

This is good news! It means the starter is good. It also means that the problem is somewhere between the positive battery terminal and the starter.

First, check the battery terminal to make sure the cable is on tight.

Next, try jumpering the solenoid, and see if the starter turns over strong. If it does, then your problem is the solenoid. If it doesn't, then the problem is the wiring either between the battery and the solenoid, or between the solenoid and the starter.

I found the starting problem it was the starter relay B, the relay was cliking but still not working ,when i replaced the starter relay b ,the bike started and idled perfect but when i try to give the bike some throttle the bike will not go past a idle and will backfire ,like it is flooding itself ?? Could this be a pinched hose or a vacumm hose??
