My 1500 Died - NOT

Postby cal3san » Sun Dec 09, 2012 7:51 pm

Yesterday my 1500 died not once but twice on the way home from the Oriental, NC Spirit of Christmas Parade. Couldn't figure out the problem at first. Then, I noticed the locking nut on one of the throttle cables was dangling halfway down the cable. I put it back in its rightful place and gave it an extra turn to make sure it was secure. Took a spin down the street and back with no hiccups. Ditto 20 mile run to Oriental and back this afternoon.

Checking the locking nuts on the throttle cables is now part of my pre-ride check.

I too check for dangling things before I ride. :) ...but...A loose cable locking nut should not kill your ride.
At worse,it would only allow the cable to loosen a bit leaving free play in the throttle.
I'm at a loss on how it could be related...so be prepared if it should die again.......

Can any one explain further????

I'm with Virgil on this one? How did a lose throttle cable cause your engine to die? There are 2 cables, one pulls the throttle open and the other shuts the throttle (along with the return spring on the carb). If the return cable broke it might make the engine not return to idle, but would not kill it. If the other cable broke or unadjusted itself, you would not be able to accelerate (it would just idle) or you would have a lot of play on the throttle. Can't see how this caused your engine to die? I think you have another problem that is intermittent and just happened to start working when you moved and re tightened the cables!!

i really have no idea what caused the 1500 to die but it was gas starved. WhenI got it started the first time only enough fuel got in to go about a mile. Ditto the second time. My initial thought was the dangling throttle cable was not allowing enough petro to get to the engine.

It has been 250 miles since both incidents and nothing more has happened. However, since I have no maintenance records for the machine (bought it a couple weeks ago) and I'm leaving on a 2K trip this weekend I'm going to change the air filter. At the same time I'm going to change out the fuel filter. If I get another stoppage then I'll check the fuel petcock.
