89 GL1500 Neutral Switch

Postby jjett002 » Mon Jan 07, 2013 5:28 pm

The neutral light does not come on (or rarely does). I know there is a gear indicator switch in the front of the engine. But, according to the parts manual there is a neutral switch on the gear shift lever, but the repair manual does not list it or give any indication that it exists. Anybody got any suggestions as to how to find it and repair it. The part is currently available, but don't know where to put it.

I think the one your talking about is for the reverse circuit. It's on the right side

According to the parts list for the Gearshift Fork it is listed as:
35600-MM5-003 SWITCH, NEUTRAL- '88 '89, ALL'90, SE/A '91
It appears to be parts of the shift pedal linkage.
Curious as to what the "right side" means...right side of what?

I think I got this right. The neutral switch that is up front of the engine is a multi contact switch that operates the neutral lamp, the OD lamp, ignition control module and cruise module(if equipped).
The neutral switch on the right side of the engine block is used to enable the reverse system.

You are correct, the neutral switch listing in the parts diagram is for reverse. The gear indication switch is in the front of the engine under the transmission cover. Only problem is that Honda does not have that part anymore. Am trying to modify a 98 model switch.

I pulled mine out to resurface the contact area and sharpen the wiper to cure a intermittent neutral light.
I got it done but it was difficult. The switch was not made to be disassembled and it took some bending and tweaking to get it back together.
By the way.It didn't fix it.Most of the time the neutral light won't come on when shifting from 2nd down but works fine shifting from 1st up.
I think it's an alignment as the neutral landing pad is very small. It just misses it on the down shift.

Hallo guys

a similar problem occured to me when ,despite the neutral gear is actually engaged, the neutral lamp does not lit.
I have tried to identify the switch location (as explainedby your post and indications ) but I could notactually see it .
So i have 2 questions:
Does anybody has got a picture to better show its location?
Do you have any suggestions or procedures how the switch can be repalced ?

thanks
Giorgio

The first thing I'd try is making sure it's in neutral then wiggling and jiggling the reverse lever while watching the light to see if that's where the problem is.
