Iffin I had to guess....it's the intake air sensor.....Below a threshold temperature, there is a flap that diverts intake air from the exhaust area (warmer air).

Download the 88-89 euro manual from this site.
The water pump is up front like the other wings, but is much easier to get out.
I've spent months under the plastic on my 88 to "Fix" a multitude of defects. Some from lack of maintenance and some from factory design flaws.

I do now...my bad.
Most of the info you need is still in the manuals section. The bikes didn't change much in those years.

Yes, it is the Intake Air Sensor, it allows the ECU to monitor the temperature of the incoming air. Mine was disconnected when I got my bike as well. I didn't notice any difference in performance when I plugged it in, but my mileage did go up a couple MPG with it plugged in.

The water pump is at the bottom front of the engine, next to the oil filter:

Keef, you can get some manuals here:

http://www.goldwingworld.com/pages/Downloads.htm

They have a 1994 Service manual, a 1996 Honda Parts manual and the all necessary radio manual. Maybe an owners manual or two also.
