New member with new 'older' goldwing 1500/low miles

Postby MDRanger » Fri Feb 01, 2013 8:24 am

Hello Senior members! I recently picked up a great 1996 1500 se with only 22k miles and am currently flushing/changing out all fluids and filters. The bike runs great! I found an excellent video of a drive shaft and spline lube job on this great forum that increased my confidence for this maintenance. With such low miles it is a matter of age and not wear which leads me to my first question. I have heard from two local mechanics that the timing belt is probably OK if the bike has been garaged which it has. I am not entirely confident with this because of the potential damage a broken belt could do. I know rubber can dry rot with age. What do you 'voices of experience' think? Also, because it is great weather to ride now in the FL panhandle, I am thinking of enjoying the bike for the next few months and doing the lube this July when it hits 100 degrees? Should I expect the old grease in there should be OK after 22k for another couple thousand miles? I changed out the final drive oil and it was dark but not sludgy and very slightly grainy in the bottom of the drain pan. Topped it up with SYN 75w90.
Thanks a bunch for comments! :?:

SWEET! 22k miles...not even broken in! :D It would'nt hurt to change the timing belts just for peace of mind. I just changed mine for the third time after 194k miles and the belts I removed looked fine..no wear or dry rot..but I fell better now with the job done for another 60k miles. As for the lubeon the splines...just check them oout on the next tire change...that's what I would do.

Congrats on the purchase and enjoy the ride!!

Have a look at How to remove and replace your timing belts - particularly the portion at the top explaining timing belts.

Your belts, assuming they have never been changed, are 17 years old. I would 100% change the belts, regardless of mileage. The fact that your bike has low miles indicates that it has likely sat for period of time without being run, which is just as tough on the belts as lots of mileage & wear.

Congrats on your purchase.
Even though its a 96, it's new to you. :D I know how you feel. Last July, I purchased my first Goldwing. It's a 96 interstate. It only had 5,482 miles on it and purchased it for $3,500.00. Even though everything looked fine, I immediately had the oil, belts, tires, basically everything I could think of changed on it for my own piece of mind.
Now, to me, it's a brand new bike. :)
