gl1500 appears to be intermittent 4cyl's only

Postby twostrokes48 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 3:43 pm

Before I start tearing all the tupperware off the 89 wing to replace the reverse cables that just arrived I have another question. Last time I rode it there was a surge/boug/surge/boug thing going on with the engine. Now the last time I had that on a 1500 wing, it turned out to be a loose wire on one set of the coils causing it to run on 4 cyl then make contact, back to 6. Back and forth. I will check the wires on the coils while I have it opened up.

But before I get in there, does anyone else have any ideas??? Maybe things that can cause this to happen???Hope to dig into it this weekend.

Nothing special.
Keep a look out for deteriorated vacuum lines. It's been my #1 cause of poor running.
It seems to be the weakest where a vacuum line makes a sharp 90* bend.
I found 7 of them on my 88.
Take pictures and keep us informed too. :?:

Will try to remember the pictures...I'm old remember?? Was wondering if the vacuum lines would come up. When I ask the guy I bought it from if he had known of this problem, he stated not lately, but that about 2 years ago he had similar and dealer repaired a vacuum leak that was causing it....Guess I could buy a few feet of vac. line and replace what I see.

Unfortunately the first one that failed was under the carbs.I spent all day at that one....I couldn't believe how much time it took to get the carbs off....4 hours the first time.
In total,I found 2 on each rear manifold pipe,2 on the carbs and one under the rubber mat that's under the carbs.
Of course they are all different sizes,so off to the auto parts store I went
I bought 4 different sized at 3 foot lengths...just in case.

While I was in,there I should have replaced the fuel line too.It started leaking the next week end from dry rot.
The accelerator diaphragm suffered from the same...
It hardened up and wouldn't squirt very well....Sheesh..another $50.

I've had the carbs out 4 times so far to fix all the shortfalls in design(EPA junk)...Got pretty quick at it too.
The last time took 1 hour 45 minutes from start to bench.
Just the mods to the carbs eliminated the need for the famous 4* trigger wheel, carb kit, ignition and carb control modules, etc, etc.
Solid 35 MPG...pulls hard from idle to red line and no need to shift from overdrive(5th gear) going around a corner at 20 miles per hour and 700 RPM...Just open the throttle and it goes right back to 45 MPH without growling or bucking.

Now ur makin me kinda sick....You know I am heading to FL end of next month to get the trike kit and have it installed....and guess what.....you are right on my way.....Now I could just stop by and make it worth your time to dig into it and fix all that stuff before it fails on me.....it is an 89...and everything is OLD.....Since I'm not a mechanic....I figure it would take me about 4 times the time it took you the first time. The only reason I was gonna go into it at all is cuz I watched the guy go in to my coils and figured I could maybe get that far...just a thought....

Well I'm not a mechanic either.everything I did was by trial and error.
It really isn't hard, just look close.
Actually,on some of the hoses, there's enough slack to just cut off the end and stick it back on.
The one under the carb is the worst to get to. I had my wife help and she took pictures as I fumbled about.
Oh yea,you have to drain the radiator to get the carbs off.

guess I'll see how far I can get into it. If I don't get them all, at least if something goes, I will have been down in there at least once. I'll get my son to help me. We don't work too well together. He kinda has this idea that the old man don't know jack because I a way more cautious than he is. He forgets that I still have a lot in my head, I just have a hard time physically doing things any more. He figures that also means my brain doesn't work too well anymore...still don't know which one of us is right. Probably a little bit of both.

It's common.Younger,faster.
Just tell him up front, this is gonna take time, get a beer, slow down and just help.
Mention that Master Yoda (star wars) said.."do or do not..there is no try"
It's all in the mind.
Use your best rough voice. He'll understand. :D
