Front brake will not release

Postby Retired » Tue Feb 19, 2013 5:57 pm

1988 GL1500. Front brake would not release. Could release it by relieving fluid pressure by opening bleeder valve on caliper and wheel would turn. Rebuilt both caliper and master cylinder. Worked fine for about ten miles, now will not release again. Thought it might be the caliper sticking even after being rebuilt, but the lever on the master cylinder is fully pressurized before it is pulled in (It will not pull in,full pressure staying in system without pulling lever- somehow pressure is not releasing). Piston in master cylinder IS returning to released position, but pressure in system is not releasing. Any suggestions?

I believe the return port in the master cylinder is clogged up not letting the brake fluid return back to the master cylinder. It is a very small hole in the bottom of the master cylinder. You will need to push something in the hole like a single wire from a wire brush. Also a guitar string works well for that.

Yup. It doesn't happen that often on the 1500, far more common the 4 cylinder Wings, but it can (and does) happen. You need to flush your brake fluid more often!

I use a single wire clipped from a wire brush, hold it in a pair of needle nose pliers, and ream out that tiny return port with it. That clears it out and fixes the problem.

I had shot it with brake cleaner, but obviously that didn't clear it. I have a tool with several different tips for cleaning welding torch tips and swallowing my pride went back and did what you said. It worked great. Thanks for teaching an old dog not to be too proud to ask and to actually listen when someone answers.
