gl 1500 wont start

Postby doctorwho » Sun Mar 10, 2013 7:34 pm

1990 gl 1500 with 96k on the clock. Went to start it, turned ignition on, applied choke, hit the starter. Head Lights went out, all dash and indicator lights went out. No neutral light, nothing. The clock was on and the cruise indicator light was the only signs of life. I checked all fuses that I know of. The main 30 amp, main 55amp and all fuses in the fuse box. Battery is good and even tried a jump box. Any body have any ideas where to start?
Thanks

First thing to do is to check the battery. Check the voltage right at the battery terminals. You could have a bad cell that just needed a jolt of current to push it over the edge.

You could also have a loose battery terminal clamp. Make sure they are tight, and that they aren't wiggling around. Those are the first things I would look at.

Keep us updated on this. I've had so many peculiar things happen as far as the electrical system...I write them all down for on the road breakdowns. Wing electronics can baffle you for sure.

Sounds like it may be a bad relay or loose connection. Also check all the connectors in that circuit to make sure there's no corrosion.

I know it's probably stupid to ask, but is the kill switch working?

Yes, I have checked the kill switch, the battery voltage and tried using a jump box. What I can't figure out is why the dash lights and neutral light are out and starter won't even click. I don't know which if any relay would control both of those issues. One or the other but not both. Checked all fuses in the fuse box.
this is the first time that this has happened. I thought that it would have been a main fuse of some type, but again the clock comes on, as well as the radio and cruise light.
Thanks,

Kent

Could you try one thing....turn your key to the park position and switch on the hazards....Do they work.????
Here's a starting point.Do you have 12 volts on the acessory terminals in the fuse box?
Are you using the engine/frame or the battery lug for your meter ground.????

could be the start switch itself is dirty and not making good contact or the ignition switch same thing..both can be removed cleaned and rebuilt..

I just went through a bunch of non starting issues..everything looked OK..lights fuses, relays clicking..and it turned out to be a dirty starter switch..not enough juice getting through the switch to turn the starter

I agree RB, I remember a problem like this in the past. Things not working and a few things did, very hard to diagnose. In the end it was the ignition switch.

You said the neutral light was off? Unless that light is on the starter wont run. It's a safety feature that prevents the bike from starting in gear. Check to make sure it is in neutral and try it again. I have pulled up to my garage and shifted into neutral, let out the clutch and the bike just sat there idling. however the nuetral light wasn't on and as soon as I put the side stand down the engine shut off. A little wiggle of the shift lever and it comes on again, then I can restart it.

Any Progress Doctor Who??? The wigglin / jigglin stuff are always good easy things to try....If it's not that Virgils post seemed like a good place to start. I had my starter button not returning just that little bit and it had me scatchin my head til someone told me what it was. A quick spray outside the switch must have gotten whatever dirt was causing the problem...I think eventually the switch may have freed up, but I would never have known what caused it. So don't give up on little things.

check the reverse lever also.....if it is not returned to the "out of reverse" position correctly, the bike will not start and netural light will not come back on...I had a problem with mine and just took an adjustment to fix the problem, but try wiggleing it back and forth in and out of reverse to see if you can get the neutral light to come back on. If it does, it should start.

i think the culprit was the starter relay A. it also powers the lights. that was the key. reversed the voltage on it and made it chatter like heck. reinstalled it while it was still warm and lights came on and she started. went back after a day and same thing. have a new part on order. will know for sure this weekend

How did you end up doin that type of diagnostic test (reversing the voltage to heat up the relay) ? The manual shows a relay inspection and states if there is continuity then the switch is normal. Did you do that test?

yes, a friend was helping me with this and he read the instructions wrong and hence wiring the relay backwards. After that we connected it correctly and had continuity. Then wired it back into the system and the lights came on and started.

So you never checked it for continuity 'before' the reverse check? The next day when it wouldn't start, did you check it properly for continuity without 'heating it up?' Well I hope you found the problem and ride trouble free.
