Cleaning Exhaust Pipes?

Post by VA Goldwing » Sat Dec 27, 2008 8:55 pm

Greetings all.... Just downloaded the manuals for the 1995 SE... THANK YOU!! should help tremendously.

While workng on my battery today I noted what appears to be rust on the bottom of the exhaust pipes. However, when I rubbed it with my finger it came right off. But it got me thinking... is there anything I can put on the pipes to help prevent rust / discoloration?

I don't know about PREVENTING it...most things I would use to prevent rust would burn off of exhaust pipes. However, if you do have rust spots on your chrome exhaust, rubbing the rust spots with a rolled-up piece of aluminum foil will make quick work of it.

Depending on how much it bothers you, or how much work you want to put into it; One thing you could do is "paint" the rusty pipes with exhaust header paint from any auto parts store, I'm assuming you are talking about the header pipes / muffler?
If it's the chrome covers, of coarse you wouldn't want to paint them..although I've seen stranger things!....LOL

When I had my 1100 the pipes where pretty bad.. I took a bucket of warm water and S.O.S. pads to them... worked perfect.. Then I got some wizard chrome polish and let the bike sit for a day or so.. Have to polish them every couple of weeks or the rust will reappear

Over here we have some paint called Hammerite. It is made to put directly over rusty metal. You can get it in all kinds of colours including silver. It is available in spraycans and normal cans.
I've used it on my exhaustpipes; It is still covering up a small crack in my chrome after 5 years now.
Since you only want to do the inside of your pipes (which is not a bad idea because they do rust eventually) maybe you could use such a product.

Good luck!
