GL1500 Carbs.

Postby john pasterjak » Thu Mar 21, 2013 7:04 pm

I recently rebuilt my carbs on my 1988 gl1500. It runs fine under normal acceleration but when I suddenly apply full throttle the bike seems to be starving for fuel. It kind of boggs down. If I let up on the throttle it will seem to catch up and run smooth. Should I be looking for a vacuum leak or an emissions problem. Help!!!!!

Mine had the same problems...even worse.
My cures were varied as I had multiple fuel delivery problems.
with what you describe,I'd be looking really close at the accelerator pump.
Fortunately, with a little finesse, it can be done without completely removing the carbs.
First, remove the air cleaner, start the bike and operate the throttle a few times.Shut off the bike and operate the throttle again and watch for the squirt. If it's like mine, the diaphragm is hard and the insides are corroded.
I disassembled mine, plugged soothe bypass ports, put in a new diaphragm and adjusted the control arm for a minus 0.1".
I did a post all about it including videos....search gl1500 Carb repair.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my plea for help. I did a preliminary test on my acceleration pump and found that it (kind of) gave a little squirt when the throttle was advanced quickly. I ordered a new diaphram for the pump and will be rebuilding it in the near future. I will be posting the results. I really think, based on the performance, this will be a big improvement.
