1993 GL1500 Gearshift oil seal replacement

Post by leondrew » Thu Mar 28, 2013 12:54 am

I noticed oil dripping from the gearshift shaft today of my 1993 Gl1500I. I noticed the gearshift shaft had excessive play. Does the worn seal have something to do with the excessive play? How hard is it to replace the shaft seal?
Bike has 90,000 miles.

Play in the shift arm is common and a hardened old rubber seal won't flex far enough to keep it sealed.
A new seal can be installed with a bit of work to help stop the leak but it won't help the play in the shift arm.
My 88 had a very excessive movement caused by either a worn shift link shaft or needle bearing in the block....I wasn't about to remove the engine to fix it as it has only 50k miles so I modified mine.

Try the easy way first, replace the seal....There's info about it on this site.

And for the worse case scenariohttp://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9365&start=25.....

See similar topic under the GL1500 Forum. Evidence of play at the lever may not indicate excessive play at the shaft, because of the indirect mounting to the shaft (some call it jackshaft). Have a look at the actual shaft and see if there is any float there.
